Brief History of MMA
Mixed martial arts (MMA) can be traced back to the ancient Greek sport of Pankration, an unarmed hand-to-hand combat discipline introduced in the Olympic Games in 648 B.C.
Modern MMA has its roots in a combination of five Olympic sports: boxing, freestyle wrestling, Greco-
Roman wrestling, judo, and taekwondo, along with elements of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai.
To be successful today, MMA fighters must excel in both striking and grappling. As the sport continues to grow, it is attracting world-class Olympic and collegiate athletes who are poised to elevate MMA to new heights. MMA is increasingly viewed as the natural
successor to boxing for the next generation.
The Evolution of King of the Cage
KOTC, the world's most prolific MMA promoter celebrated it's 25th anniversary this year. Founded by Terry Trebilcock, KOTC began
promoting events in 1998 when mixed martial arts was commonly
referred to as No Holds Barred (NHB) fighting.

During this formative period, KOTC and Trebilcock became leading
advocates for the development and acceptance of rules governing the
emerging sport. The organization established the United Rules of Mixed
Martial Arts Combat, drawing from the Olympic rules of boxing, judo,
wrestling, professional kickboxing, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Through the
promotion of high-quality professional events, KOTC has emerged as a
significant force in the industry.

Today, KOTC hosts over 40-50 live linear events annually across the U.S.
and in eight countries, including Australia, Canada, England, Japan,
Africa, Singapore, China, and Lithuania. The organization produces a
wide range of events, from large arena shows to smaller underground
competitions. KOTC attributes its success and ability to produce weekly
shows to its strong allegiance with fighters and fans, as well as its
dedicated and experienced team.
KOTC has consistently developed many of the top fighters in MMA, including stars like Daniel Cormier, TJ Dillashaw, Ronda Rousey, Urijah Faber, Forrest Griffin, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Keith Jardine, Mac Danzig, Rashad Evans, Diego Sanchez, Ricco Rodriguez, Paul Buentello, Joe Stevenson, Carlos Condit, Sean Sherk, andThiago Alves. Legends such as Don Frye, Shonie Carter, Dan Severn, and Vernon "Tiger" White also spent significant parts of their careers competing for KOTC.

KOTC has proven to be an integral part of MMA's evolution and continues to be one of the world's most dominant MMA promotions.
Amid political challenges facing MMA, Terry Trebilcock saw the sport's future in the mainstream. With years of experience managing athletic clubs and training with fighters, he launched King of the Cage (KOTC) in 1998, starting with an event held on a tennis court. From humble beginnings, Trebilcock built KOTC into a leading MMA organization.

Trebilcock’s talent for discovering and developing fighters has been unmatched. KOTC has produced over 1,000 profitable events and amassed the largest MMA video library, with over 1,500 hours of HD content. He has played a key role in elevating MMA into a global phenomenon.
