What a great night of fights! KOTC's first show on Showtime and it went
fantastic! 10 exiting fights that saw everything from submissions, to
decisions, and knockouts.
Our first bout had Mushin Corbbrey battle Lee Gibson to a Unanimous Decision
after 3 rounds. Although Gibson landed several good blows, Corbbrey took the
decision after landing numerous leg kicks to Gibson's left leg.
Fight #2 saw Aaron Rosa improve his record to a perfect 10-0, over Jefferson
Silva, after a doctor stoppage at the end of the first round. Doctors
stopped the fight after it was determined that the cut on Silva was impeding
his vision.
Fight 3 was Scott Jorgensen Vs Chris David. Jorgensen got the better of the
stand-up and on the ground through the majority of the three, five minute
round fight. Jorgensen went home with the win via Unanimous Decision.
The fourth fight of the night was supposed to see KOTC 170 pound champ,
Aaron Wetherspoon in a title unification bout with Gladiator Challenge 170
pound champ, Jeremiah Metcalf. These two warriors have fought once before,
in June of 2006, with Wetherspoon coming out on top with a majority
decision. However, this fight would not happen because Aaron Wetherspoon
would not be cleared due to medical reasons.
On three days notice, Gladiator Challenge 185 lb champion, Jamie Jara, took
the fight. But because of the weight difference, the fight would now be for
Jara's Middleweight title. Metcalf came out strong and the fight went back
and forth until the 4:15 minute mark of the first round, when Jara caught
Metcalf with a solid left hand, dropping Metcalf to the ground and getting
the win via knockout and retaining his Gladiator challenge Middleweight
title.
The main event of the night saw KJ Noons, who is coming off of a knockout
loos to Charles "Krazy Horse" Bennett, face off against Edson Berto in a
Lightweight battle. Noons seemed to control the fight for the most part and
seemed to be gassing during the second round. Berto looked for the takedown
all through the fight, but just couldn't find it as Noons stopped them on a
regular basis.
The :45 mark of the third round saw Noons catch Berto with a knee to the
head that dropped Berto to the canvas. Noons quickly got top position and
landed two more blows before the referee intervened and stopped the fight.
Noons takes the win over Berto via KO and improves his record to 5-2.
The first under card fight of the night belonged to the ladies. Shayna
Baszler submitted Jan Finneyby by armbar, and getting the win. Baszler
improves her record to 6-3, with all 6 wins coming by way of submission.
The next fight had Josh Neal do battle with Eric Biondo. Both fighters came
into the fight with records of 1-0, but it was Neal that left with a 2-0
record after referee Cecil Peoples stopped the fight, when Josh dropped
Biondo with a knee and quickly following up with three more punches. Neal
gets the win via TKO.
Fight #8 Anthony Ruiz Vs Jason Geris. Gladiator Challenge veteran, Jason
Geris lost the third fight of his career when he injured his knee in the
first round against Ruiz. Cecil peoples called a stop to the fight between
the first and second rounds on the advice of the doctor, giving Ruiz the TKO
win.
Tony Rubalcava looked impressive in his first MMA fight, getting the win via
TKO over Drew Montgomery at 4:19 of round 1.
The last fight of the night pitted John Reedy against Brian Cobb. Cobb gets
the win at 4:09 of the opening round, by Rear Naked Choke, a move that has
caused all three losses on Reedy's career.
Overall, I think it was a great night! The collaboration between KOTC and
EliteXC looks like it works and hopefully we'll see it again in the future.
See you ringside at the next show!
