Tom Kenny interview with Krazy Mike 7/3/07

KM: Big submission win in your last KOTC fight is this how you expected to win?
TK:
I wanted to try and keep the fight standing but the takedown was right there so I had to take it plus my instructor John DeLaO told me to get the fight to the ground and go to work instead of going in there and trading with him.

KM: You recently went to Thailand to work on your stand up game, tell us about it.
TK:
I was offered a job in Thailand to teach Jiu-Jitsu and I figured it was a great opportunity to get out of my comfort zone and to work on my stand up. The job offer wasn't what they promised and I found myself stranded in Thailand having to buy my own ticket home but I learned a lot from the Muay Thai instructor Chen Long and I feel my stand up has improved. Overall it was a learning experience and I know to get everything upfront if I do anything like that again

KM: You have not lost a fight since your World Title fight, are you working towards another shot at the World Title?
TK:
Right now I'm just trying to get better each and every fight but my goal is to get a world title around my waist. I feel that I need to win a couple more fights before I'm mentioned for another title fight. I'm also considering moving down to Lightweight but I'm not sure just yet

KM: Aaron Wetherspoon is who you lost the World Title fight against. Do you think anyone can beat him? Are you ready to go to war with Wetherspoon again?
TK:
I think Aaron is a freak, I mean the guy is a tremendous athlete and he gets better every fight. He has a great school that he trains out of and he's huge for 170. I don’t see too many people being able to take that belt away from him in KOTC. As far as me and him going to war again I'm up for it again but there are 2 or 3 other guys that have earned title shots that are Jeremiah Metcalf, Mike Guymon and James Fanshier so before I get another title shot I feel they should at least be offered the fight before myself

KM: Have you talked with KOTC about another World Title Fight?
TK:
As of now we haven't talked about fighting for another Title

KM: You have a great fan base, what do you contribute this to?
TK:
I try to be an exciting fighter and to entertain the crowd. I think that is why I have a great fan base. I also try to make it out to all of the KOTC's and interact with everyone that way people remember who I am

KM: Are you Single? Do you have any kids?
TK:
Yeah I'm single training takes up a lot of my time so if anyone’s interested.....haha

KM: I noticed in your last fight coming down the ramp you were wearing a BLACK belt, congrats and when did you receive it?
TK:
Thanks I received it in September. When I first started fighting I set a lot of goals, some of the goals I set were within reach and then there were others that I thought I would never reach. That way I always had something to work towards. Getting my BB is by far my biggest accomplishment. The only thing missing now is a Shiny belt to put around my waist

KM: What are your long term goals in Cage Fighting?
TK:
I still have a few goals that I'd like to conquer. The first is getting a World Title and the second is to fight in Japan. I'd be willing to go over and fight in Japan for sushi so if anyone has any hook ups let me know

KM: Would you like to own your own school someday?
TK:
Yeah my plan is to get all the fighting out of my system that way when I want to open up a school I can focus on that and not be distracted with fighting. I don't want to be an instructor who is going to have his students teaching the classes. I mean if it’s my school with my name on the door my students shouldn't be teaching the classes. I've been at DeLaO Jiu-Jitsu for almost 8 years now and John has taught 99% of the classes and I've found that to be pretty rare and I'd like to continue that with my school.

KM: When is your next scheduled fight?
TK:
Before my last fight I found out that my instructor had come down with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma which is a form of cancer so I told him while he was going through his treatments for that I'd take over teaching classes for him so as of right now I'll be helping out and teaching while John can't. I've put fighting on hold as of right now so I'm not sure when my next fight will be

KM: I want to thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to do this interview with me. If you want to thank your sponsors, KOTC, or whoever feel free!
TK:
First I'd like to thank you for doing this interview and I'd also like to thank all of the men and women at DeLaO Jiu-Jitsu who helped get me ready for my last fight.

I have some great sponsors who have been there in good times and bad. Without them I wouldn't be where I am today they are:

DeLaO Jiu-Jitsu, Vitamin Water, Topping Events, Sullen Hurley, Sirius Athletic Wear, Clinch Gear, DSO Eyewear, White House of Laguna, Champion Nutrition, Booyaa Fight Wear, Hitman Fight Gear, ShomanArt.com, and Terry Treblicock for jump starting my MMA Career.
